“City Lights helped us.  It gave us an opportunity and opened many doors for my daughter Priscilla.  It gave her the self-esteem and motivation to pursue her career and do whatever she wanted to do. She now auditions and acts like it’s second nature.”

Scholarship Parent for 3 years

City Lights Youth Theatre is supported in part by public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Origins Project
Originally conceived in 1996 in partnership with the Lower East Side Tenement museum, The Origins Project has been one of City Lights’ strongest programs for 11 years. Origins is an six-week summer program in which 15 teens write and produce an original play based on an aspect of New York history.

Partners have included:

Lower East Side Tenement Museum (Summer 1996 - Summer 2003)
Brooklyn Historical Society on this project this summer. (Summer 2004)
American Jewish Historical Society (Summer 2005)
New York Historical Society (Summer 2006)
Museum of the City of New York (Summer 2007)

Publicolor
Theatre Workshops and Colorful Changes
Teaching Artists provided theatre games workshops for Publicolor's Color Club kids. Publicolor staffers painted City Lights' reception area with our cityscape as well as bold colors and stars.

Brooklyn Historical Society
Voices in Time and Teaching American History
Brooklyn Historical Society provided primary source seminars for City Lights' NEA-funded project, Voices in Time: Exploring History through Theatre. As part of a Federal Teaching American History grant, City Lights trained teachers in Brownsville, Brooklyn to use theatre to enliven the teaching of History.
