Above video: Mall shopper describes what she sawUpdate 6 p.m.: The RCSO released the following statement on its Facebook page: “Today, at approximately 1:15 p.m., multiple calls were received by 911 regarding a shooting taking place at the Augusta Mall. Within 90 seconds, multiple units from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) and the Richmond County Marshal’s Office arrived on scene.Upon arrival, deputies located a male victim who had been shot. A Marshal’s deputy immediately began CPR while RCSO units secured entrances and exits to ensure those leaving the mall were checked before exiting the property.Mall security played an essential role in the response. Thanks to prior planning, security personnel quickly provided officers with video, photos, and suspect descriptions that were broadcast immediately to responding officers. One suspect was apprehended on mall property and another was caught while fleeing toward a nearby gas station by road patrol deputies.The RCSO Incident Commander distributed photos via text and email to all responding units and agencies, maintaining constant communication with commanders throughout the incident. The RCSO SWAT Team secured the perimeter and cleared parking lots and vehicles, while the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, working with an RCSO liaison, systematically cleared all interior hallways, bathrooms, and businesses inside the mall.Agencies assisting in today’s response included:•Columbia County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO)•Richmond County Board of Education Police (RCBOE)•Richmond County Marshal’s Office•Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI)•Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)•Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF)•Mall SecurityCentral EMS and the Augusta Fire Department treated and transported the gunshot victim along with two additional individuals inside the mall who suffered unrelated minor medical issues.Video footage indicates that today’s incident began as a fistfight that quickly escalated when one individual drew a firearm. All businesses inside the mall were cleared one by one, and individuals were safely escorted out by RCSO and CCSO deputies.Sheriff Eugene Brantley stated: “Today’s incident is yet another reminder of how quickly senseless violence can turn deadly. While we cannot prevent every bad act, we will always respond with speed, professionalism, and determination to keep our community safe. Violence has no place in Augusta, and together with our partners and citizens, we will continue working every day to stop it before it starts.””Update 4:20 p.m.: Authorities say the victim in the shooting has died.
