A 29-year-old Asian-Australian woman with almost no business experience made a whopping 3.8 million dollars (approx Rs 31 crore) in just a year after she came up with an innovative solution that corrects hooded eyelids and monolids. Joyce Wong, a 29-year-old woman from Sydney, launched Char Cosmetics on January 6, 2022, by selling a Magic Glue that creates a lifted or double eyelid for those who have hooded eyelids and monolids. The idea popped into her mind one day while she was getting her lashes done. She decided to launch a product which would benefit others.
Right from high school, Joyce Wong did not find the right products to highlight her eyes, especially the lids, the way she wanted them. She shared in an interview with a media portal, “I’ve always had a love-hate relationship with my hooded eyes. I never wanted surgery to change them completely, as they are part of who I am, but I did want a temporary solution when applying makeup.”
Char Cosmetics was not an overnight business which became successful. She worked tirelessly to get her company running while she also balanced being a mother to a one-year-old daughter, Amelia. She shared that while growing up as an Asian Australian, she made every attempt to transform the look of her hooded eye. Surgery could have been a way out, but she was looking for a temporary solution while putting on makeup.
She wanted to create a unique product that would resolve her issue with eyelids. Joyce Wong wanted to introduce a lightweight formula like glue but not too sticky, something strong like tape, but invisible. Her Magic Glue lasts up to 18 hours and can be reapplied over makeup as well which creates a seamless look. Her target audience for the product is women above the age of 40 who have hooded eyelids and monolids, for whom applying eye makeup might be a struggle.
Speaking of her business, it was not an overnight success. Hence, whenever she needed any insight, she would always seek her mother’s advice, whom Woyce refers to as a business advisor. Her mother is in the beauty industry and she has been one of the biggest helps while setting up Char Cosmetics.
Joyce Wong faced many challenges which ranged from lack of sleep which would break her down mentally, to being a mum to a one-year-old and running a business.
