When it comes to business ventures, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are no strangers to the world of beauty. While most know the twins’ foray in fashion, some might not realise that makeup and fragrance brand Elizabeth And James—named after their two younger siblings—is theirs too.
And now, the near-identical pair are releasing their very own “trio of hand-blended oils” under their fashion label, The Row.
Developed in collaboration with artisan perfumer Haley Alexander van Oosten, founder of artisanal fragrance line L’Oeil du Vert, the Olsen twins’ new scent oils are available in three unisex blends of sandalwood. The best part? Well, it would have to be the fragrance names—R, O and W—clearly named after their brand.
But the creation of their fragrances didn’t happen overnight. In fact, the development process of their rollerball scent oils took a total of four years. Each scent on offer gives fragrance fanatics a fresh take on the classic note of sandalwood—a woody scent that has risen in popularity thanks to perfumes like Diptyque’s Tam Dao Eau de Toilette.
As for the profiles of each fragrance, ‘R’ is described as “sandalwood’s embrace” and merges sandalwood with tobacco and rose, accompanied by ‘O’ which blends sandalwood with waterlily and frankincense. And lastly, ‘W’ which boasts a profile of the earthy note, mixed with amber and champa which is commonly used in incense.
In a rare interview with The Wall Street Journal, Ashley explained how the dynamic duo came upon the opportunity simply by being fans of their collaborator’s products.
“We met Haley through her company, L’Oeil du Vert,” she told the publication. “We started wearing her oils, and the idea of creating something together was a natural progression of our relationship.”
For those who are eager to get their hands on the scents, let it be known that their price range matches their luxury brand The Row, meaning that you’ll be out of pocket a rather hefty sum.
The 7mL bottles each stack up to different totals, with ‘R’ and ‘W’ both retailing at AUD $666, while ‘O’ comes in at AUD $747.63. While, yes, those prices are gasp-worthy, their ingredients list looks to be the reason why. Containing some of the most expensive ingredients that the perfume industry offers, the three scent oils are also only available in limited quantities.
Of course, this isn’t the twins’ first foray into perfumery, as mentioned before, the pair’s beauty brand Elizabeth and James saw the launch of their first fragrance, Nirvana. The perfume quickly became a hit with more iterations created to expand the range, like Nirvana Amethyst and Nirvana French Grey. And honestly, looking back at how successful their first fragrance was, this news is hardly left of field.
Given the upcoming festive season—and the general dedication to Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen offerings—a set of fragrances fit for the scent savant in your life seems like an obvious next step for the brand.
