A Perth day spa has apologised for “an error of judgement” after a couple complained that the spa’s advertised ‘luxury’ experience was “bogan”.

And the Vanilla Face & Body Spa in Perth said it had taken “immediate action to correct” the “misstep”, including redefining features of the package.

Beth and her partner went to the spa expecting an unforgettable experience after forking out hundreds of dollars for a couple’s package.

They said they were instead treated to what they called “bogan luxury” in a gazebo that “looks like it was from someone’s backyard”.

Beth revealed on TikTok that they had paid $330 for a package at the spa, which is located inside, but which is a separate business to, the Rendezvous Hotel on the beachfront at Scarborough.

The experience started well, with couple treated to “really nice massages”.

But they then decided to pay $55 each to keep the good times rolling for another hour.

“We paid extra to have a private couple’s balcony experience…which is this gazebo,” Beth quipped, as she shared footage of an indoor area above the hotel lobby.

“That’s bird poo so looks like this gazebo was from someone’s backyard…maybe off Gumtree.”

Rather than enjoying sea views out in the open air as they expected, the couple found themselves staring at dark curtains inside a foyer area while being offered “nibbles from the other lounge where everyone got to go for free”.

“Fake flowers, of course, you’ve got to make sure the flowers don’t die and fake flowers don’t die,” she added.

“Here’s some miscellaneous machinery that was part of our view, bit of dust too. If you squinted, the dust could look like sand on a beach.”

Beth also joked they were given rocks that you could “throw off the balcony, I guess, into the (hotel) lobby where people were eating their lunch”.

Beth’s video racked up 34,000 views with hundreds of people shocked and amused by the couple’s experience.

“How did the workers keep a straight face taking you to the balcony,” one person asked.

“This is hilarious! How on earth can they charge this?” another added.

One pointed out: “This looks like a DIY – at someone’s house 10/10, at a hotel absolutely not.”

Spa responds

In a statement to 7Life, a Vanilla Day Spa spokesperson said the business had taken “immediate action to correct this misstep”, including issuing “a full refund” and “sincerest apologies” to the couple.

The couple had given the spa a “five-star rating” on all feedback questions, including treatment and customer service, the spa spokesperson said, while noting the couple’s remark that they had experienced “really nice massages“ by its senior therapists.

Regarding the private lounge facilities, the spa said it had now “removed” this area as part of the particular package, replacing it with the “open lounge area”.

“As per our website, it shows this is inside (a) private lounge area with a bottle of bubbles and chocolates. We apologise for the error in judgement with this package,” the statement said.

“We can inform that we have decided to remove the area as part of this included package. We now offer a bottle of bubbles and chocolates for this package in our open lounge area.”

Vanilla Spa is a long-term leaseholder at the hotel and run as a completely separate business, the statement said.

“We have been a highly recommended spa for many years and continue to have many regular satisfied customers with very complimentary reviews,” it said.

“Vanilla Spa is an independent owner operated business that employs a team of 18 senior therapists that all take much care and pride on the satisfaction of all our wonderful clientele and guests who we have the pleasure of offering our services to.

“We are sorry that we have fallen short in this instance and have taken immediate action to correct this misstep.”
