Say what you will about the trendiness of astrology, but it takes a certain kind of intuitive fastidiousness to spot a fellow Virgo—which Sofia Richie Grainge happens to be. With a personal style that epitomizes “quiet luxury” and a “clean” makeup aesthetic that emphasizes natural beauty, she exudes the traits of the zodiac’s most meticulous earth sign.

“I feel like it’s a really L.A. thing to say ‘I’m a Virgo and I feel it,’ but it really is a thing among Virgos. In my family, my dad’s a Gemini, my brother’s a Gemini, my mom’s a Gemini … and then my sister and I are Virgos, and we just connect on another level,” Richie Grainge tells Bazaar.com. “Our thought processes are the same.”

Despite being a celebrity since birth (as daughter of Grammy-winning balladeer Lionel Richie) and her current It girl status, Richie Grainge is welcoming and down to earth, displaying an openhearted willingness to connect that is truly endearing. Behind her, the Pacific Ocean serves as the perfect backdrop at Soho House’s Malibu seaside property Little Beach House. This is where Richie Grainge’s inner circle of friends—among them celebrity makeup artist Ash K. Holm, models Josephine Skriver and Shanina Shaik, and, of course, husband Elliot Grainge and sister Nicole Richie—have gathered to celebrate her new collaboration with Hourglass Cosmetics.

The occasion is timed with the vegan and cruelty-free brand’s launch of its Veil Hydrating Skin Tint (retailing for $49), a feather-light and summer-friendly launch that feels nothing like typical complexion makeup. “I enjoy anything that is natural and as clean as possible,” Richie Grainge says. “As someone with sensitive skin that breaks out really easily, it was one of the few product lineups that didn’t break me out.”

Having dealt with bouts of dermatitis in the past, she is meticulous about what she puts on her skin—checking another box for the Virgo camp, a sign obsessed with all things health and wellness. In a similar vein, she admits she has long used coconut oil to slick back her signature high buns and ponies. “Initially, I did it because my hair was so fried, but I loved it so much that I kept doing it.”

She continues: “You know what, it is when my skin is healthy, and my hair is healthy, that I feel most confident. So, I make a very conscious effort every night and every morning to take the best care of my skin, body, and hair.” This attention to her beauty regimen is part of what has made her TikTok account such a sensation, a place where she shares her favorite beauty products and regimens with her three million followers. It was after announcing her love of Hourglass Cosmetics during a “Get Ready With Me” post on the app that the brand first took note and decided to reach out.

As for her newfound beauty influencer status, Richie Grainge is both surprised and thrilled. “It’s so nice to partner with a brand that I organically love so much,” she says. “I had been wearing Hourglass Cosmetics on my honeymoon and after the wedding. When they reached out to me after my wedding, I was honored!”

Her modesty is infectiously likable. Asked whether she ever anticipated becoming the beauty world’s next It girl, she actually laughs in disbelief as she admits it came as a huge surprise. “I’ve always been all about natural beauty, so I am really flattered that people connect with it,” she says. She attributes part of this signature aesthetic to Grainge, who she says has encouraged her to embrace her natural beauty and has helped her “feel comfortable in my own skin.”

This grounded foundation and the self-knowledge to practice self-care will be imperative given the recent momentum of her career. After a whirlwind year, it’s hard not to wonder what her next move will be. “Since I was a kid, I’ve had so many different career goals. But now that I’ve gotten to a certain stage of my life, I feel like I know exactly what I want to do,” she says. “I’ve always wanted to be a fashion designer. Fashion is my passion … and it’s so lame that that just rhymed.”

Still, everyone needs downtime—particularly after non-stop business collaborations, life changes, and double digit trips to Europe. Richie Grainge will be resting up at home with her husband and dogs this summer. “I unwind in my downtime with my husband, at my house, with my dogs, on the couch,” she says definitively. In addition to her skin, hair, and body care regimens, she also enjoys activities like journaling—something she says while eyeing my Hermès notebook, perhaps contemplating a future purchase, or an idea for TikTok.
