A staple store found in almost every American mall has filed for its second bankruptcy and will close some locations.
Known for its brightly colored jewelry and ear piercing services, Claire’s U.S. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings this week. The filing covers Claire’s and ICING stores in the U.S.
“This decision is difficult, but a necessary one. Increased competition, consumer spending trends and the ongoing shift away from brick-and-mortar retail, in combination with our current debt obligations and macroeconomic factors, necessitate this course of action for Claire’s and its stakeholders,” Chris Cramer, CEO of Claire’s, said in a statement. “We remain in active discussions with potential strategic and financial partners and are committed to completing our review of strategic alternatives.”
The chain last filed for bankruptcy in 2018. At the time of that filing, Claire’s stores were located in 99% of American malls.
Stores closing
In its release, Claire’s said all its retail stores will remain open “while the company continues to explore strategic alternatives.”
According to company court filings cited by King5.com, 18 Claire’s and Icing stores will be closing with going-out-of-business sales lasting until Sept. 7. Additional stores could close in the future, the filing noted.
