Oakbrook Center has been selected in a national vote as one of the top shopping centers in the United States.
The 63-year-old mall at Route 83 and 22nd Street in Oak Brook finished No. 4 in USA Today’s recently released 10Best rankings.
Editors and a panel of experts started by nominating their top picks, factoring in the variety of stores, the breadth of dining and entertainment options, ease of access, and events that set them apart from the rest. Then, readers voted to decide the winners, according to information from the publication.
“Oakbrook Center offers an elegant open-air shopping experience just west of Chicago, with green spaces filled with interactive art installations, as well as over 170 stores,” the listing stated. “The center features a mix of upscale retailers, national brands and dining options that range from quick bites to chef-driven restaurants. Seasonal events and a walkable layout make it a popular year-round destination for shoppers from the city, suburbs and beyond.”
Serge Khalimsky, senior general manager of Oakbrook Center, said it’s a great feeling to be recognized as one of the top shopping centers in the country.
“From the moment voting began, our entire community came together in support,” he said. “Tenants, vendors, shoppers, and local leaders all rallied behind Oakbrook, and this recognition is a reflection of that incredible collective effort.”
Khalimsky said he believes Oakbrook Center was ranked so high because it’s a place that has something for everyone.
“Whether you’re coming to shop, grab a bite to eat, work out, or just enjoy some entertainment, it’s somewhere people genuinely want to spend their time,” he said. “And from our perspective, our goal is to keep giving people reasons to come back, whether that’s bringing in in-demand new tenants or creating spaces where families and the community can come together.”
He said mall management is always looking for ways to make Oakbrook Center feel like more than just a shopping center. To do so, the mall hosts free summer events, such as Movies on the Lawn, a Father’s Day Car Show, and photos with Santa, along with other fun, interactive experiences that bring people together.
Khalimsky said Oakbrook Center is fortunate because it’s a place where both retailers and people want to be.
“That puts us in a unique position,” he said. “Our shoppers’ needs are always changing, so we’re constantly thinking about how to evolve, whether that is leasing, experiences or development opportunities.”
Oak Brook village President Larry Herman said the village’s dining and shopping scene has burgeoned over the last few years, and Oakbrook Center has been a huge part of that.
“Oak Brook has become a regional destination, appreciated for its convenient location, world class stores and restaurants, and unmatched public safety,” he said.
“Oakbrook Center has been ranked as one of the country’s top malls as a result of the thoughtful collaboration of the village and (Oakbrook Center owner) Brookfield Properties. The village will continue to support our community as the premier place to shop, dine, work, live and play.”
Michael Manzo, the longest-serving current Village Board member, said village officials and staff have always been very proud and protective of our Oakbrook Center.
“There has been a renewed focus on the mall these past few years, which has yielded tremendous results,” he said. Low taxes, a safe shopping experience and elimination of (nearby) red-light cameras have all contributed to continued improvement to our wonderful mall.
“I believe everyone in Oak Brook is extremely proud and thankful to have such a premier mall in our village.”
Khalimsky said he expects Oakbrook Center to continue its success, even at a time when many shopping malls have closed, or will be closing,
“Oakbrook Center has been thriving for over 60 years, and it’s become the place where brands, restaurants, and experiences want to be when they’re looking to establish a presence in the Chicago area,” he said. “We’ve grown alongside the community, bringing in luxury and first-to-market brands, entertainment concepts, fitness and home furnishing options.
“We’re really excited about what’s ahead for Oakbrook Center and truly believe in the longevity and future of this property.”
